Palestinian Fighters Break Through Southern Israel: Chairman of the Israeli Council Killed, 5 Military Officers Kidnapped by Hamas
Palestinian militants drive an Israeli military vehicle that was captured by gunmen who infiltrated southern Israel, in the northern Gaza Strip.
Ofir Liebstein, Chairman of the Sha'ar Hanegev Council in southern Israel, was reportedly killed in fighting with Hamas militants Saturday (7/10/2023).
“Ofir was killed as he fought to defend the city during a terrorist attack,” The Times of Israel reported, citing a statement from the Council.
Liebstein was killed in a firefight with Hamas militants when a barrage of rockets hit southern Israel
Reports also say that Palestinian fighters broke through the barrier fence and crossed the border from Gaza.
Regional Council Mayor Sha'ar Hanegev was defending his community when he was killed., is currently filling his position,
The Jerusalem Post reported that Ofir Liebstein's position has now been replaced by Yossi Keren, who previously served as Deputy Chairman of the Council.
The Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council is a regional council in the northwestern Negev, in the Southern District of Israel.

Five Military Officers Kidnapped
Palestinian militants have reportedly infiltrated Israeli territory by land, sea and even paragliding.
at least 40 people died.
"Hamas claims to have kidnapped five Israel Defense Forces officers, which has not been confirmed by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces)," according to the Business Standard report.
An IDF spokesman said more than 2,200 rockets had been fired at Israel, while Hamas claimed more than 5,000 rockets had been launched.
“We are at war, and we will win,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a social media video addressed to Israelis.
“The enemy will pay a price never before known,” he added.
Sirens have been sounding for the past five hours since Hamas launched a coordinated attack on Israel.
